Chapter Eleven

Summer’s heart wouldn’t stop pounding, and it had nothing to do with the fireworks display high in the sky over Jewell Cove.

It had everything to do with the man sitting beside her. Somehow setting parameters to their relationship had eased the tension in one way and ratcheted it up in another. She was far too aware of him. He’d looked at her lips and she’d felt so drawn to him, craved his kiss and nearly leaned in to claim it. Then he’d said her name and she’d looked up and it was like they were back in her apartment this morning, in that fragment of time before he’d taken her in his arms. Electric. She was sorely tempted to slide over onto his lap and kiss away the serious expression on his face, but they were in the park, there were other people present, and she’d just finished saying she wasn’t into making out in public. So she sat back, resting against the back of the bench, and forced herself to look at the fireworks.

They were splendid, but she didn’t really enjoy them. She was distracted, far too aware of the man beside her. The shadowed figure of her ancestor was before her, staring down with a formidable expression, and guilt slid over her skin. Just a few days ago, Jax had lamented that the documentary was missing balance because there was no modern-day take on Edward Jewell. And here she was, sitting on that family secret that could help his project, and she refused to say anything.

Did she even have a good reason? She was smart enough to know that she wasn’t “tainted” by a man’s actions a hundred and fifty years ago. At the same time, bringing any attention to herself meant revealing her own past. Putting her in even a small spotlight was uncomfortable. No one, other than Abby and Jax, knew about her mother and father. She was that poor orphan who had lived with her grandparents, but the people of Jewell Cove didn’t see her as the daughter of a junkie and criminal. But they would. It would come out somehow, wouldn’t it?

She could help him but wouldn’t to protect herself, and she didn’t like that, not one bit. Not when her whole life she’d consistently tried to be kind, generous. To be the antithesis of her parents. To help where she could; no job too small or menial. Pride wasn’t really her thing… or was it? Was it pride, or its counterpart, shame, that drove her to “be a good person?”

She turned her head, feeling guilty about keeping the secret, wondering if she could find a way to tell him, when she caught him watching not the fireworks but her. The pull between them was so strong; Summer didn’t give a damn about the show and simply wanted to be with him again. To feel so incredibly alive and wanted and cherished. She hungered for it, for him. And so she said nothing, but stood and held out her hand.
